#17 CANDY CORN

How could I not include this iconic childhood candy & symbol of Halloween? I personally am not a fan of candy {prefer lots of chocolate instead ;)} but know that candy corn is everywhere this time of year. One more Halloween candy inspired painting coming in spot #18 - can you guess?

Just noticed I am posting #17 on the 17th... freaky!!

#16 PUMPKIN PAIL

How could I not include the little plastic pumpkin pail for collecting Halloween treats?! I think this is one of the best childhood Halloween images - alongside #17 which is soon to come....

#15 CURSIVE WRITING

These teaching charts on paper & the chalkboard for cursive writing are disappearing as is the actual teaching of cursive writing itself from schools. My handwriting has never been the best (better at printing, all caps - likely due to manual drafting classes in design school) but I do love cursive writing. Let's write some letters! Try writing next time - so you'll remember how to do to teach your kids! ;)

#14 LUNCH KIT & THERMOS

Yay for the plastic lunch kit & thermos combo! Always an essential part of the much anticipated 'back to school' shopping excursions. Trying to think exactly which one(s) I had: for sure we had a Holly Hobbie one, but I think that was metal, there was Strawberry Shortcake, maybe Care Bears? I decided to do a little nod to the Smurfs in this painting as they were so popular in the 80's and unisex too. What was on your lunch box?

#13 ATARI JOYSTICK

Atari Joystick - one of the first video game experiences for me aside from the table sized version of Pac-Man I remember from the ski hill, where you sit on either end and look down at the screen to play. We had an Atari (I think it was a gift) and I believe it came with one basic game of ping pong. Actually, I think playing real ping pong was more fun than that game!

Ooey, gooey golden roasted marshmallow on a stick! Perfect summertime campfire companion. I'm sure a memory for most and more often a little burnt on the outside but still yummy on the inside!

A classic image of childhood - the red tricycle! Toddler's first wheels...

#8 BANANA SEAT BICYCLE

The banana seat bike - a popular one for girls. I don't think I personally had one but think one of my sisters did. I had to add the little spoke balls on this one - I for sure had multi-coloured spoke decorations on my bike!

#7 VIEWMASTER REEL

The Viewmaster was so fun! A unique way to enjoy 7 3-D images of your favourite characters & stories. I wish I could remember which ones we actually had... maybe some Disney in there I'm sure. Anyone remember any reels they had?

#6 BEGINNER SWIM BADGES

Beginner Swim Badges, the 1st 2 levels in Canadian swimming lessons. It was hard to decide which colours to do, so I started at the beginning to leave room for the others to find their way into the 100 if needed. I think the levels were: yellow, orange, red, maroon, blue, green, grey(?) - then what came next? Swimmers - help me out...!

#5 ROCKET POPSICLE

The rocket popsicle, a playful summer treat. Although I think I was more a fan of the standard grape popsicle. How about you?

#4 FP KING + QUEEN

I have many fond memories of playing with the various Fisher Price figures & toy sets. The king & queen stand out a lot because we actually still have this royal couple & the castle set that they reign over in my parent's basement. I am sure that I will sneak in a couple more FP characters... Do you have any faves?

#3 CASSETTE TAPE

This may not just be from your childhood but teenage years and beyond as well. Think books on tape on car rides, talking & singing into the tape recorder to make a tape to mail to your grandparents, getting your first tape player/stereo/ghetto blaster, buying packages of blank tapes to create mixes, giving & getting mix tapes, waiting to hear that song on the radio to press play + record at the same time... Anyone still have tapes in a box somewhere?

#2 RED, WHITE & BLUE BALL

I remember this ball in the school yard or in gym class - forget which. For me it is a symbol of outdoor play.

#1 PAPER AIRPLANE

For the first object portrait of 100 tiny brushstrokes, I thought that a simple & classic
childhood toy would be perfect. Do you remember making your first paper airplane?

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

Welcome to 100 tiny brushstrokes - the childhood memory project.

This project is a division of tiny brushstrokes. These paintings aren't geared towards children yet they are inspired by childhood & a sense of nostalgia geared towards those from "my generation" and others.

Inspired by my own child & recollections of my own childhood, this project will focus on a series of small painted portraits of objects that will evoke memories of childhood.

I will create 100 5" x 7" little paintings capturing the objects of childhood memories.

These paintings will then be posted on my instagram feed (tinybrushstrokes), on facebook, blogged about here & put up for sale on my etsy site for a great price.

If you see one you like - snap it up - I'll only be doing 1 painting per object (no repeats).

If you have an idea or suggestion for an object to be captured in paint that evokes a childhood memory for you (or someone you know), post it on my facebook page & I'll (most likely) add it to the list!

Thanks for taking part in this project & check back often to watch the collection of 100 tiny brushstrokes paintings grow!
